What is SAP MII?

SAP MII (Manufacturing Integration & Intelligence) is a platform, whose application focus is in the area of vertical integration. Thereby, the business processes are linked with the manufacturing processes in the ERP. The main functions are:

  • ERP integration according to SAP standards
  • Shop floor integration based on industry standards
  • Mapping the process logistics
  • User interfaces adjusted to the process, suitable for on-site usage

The templates developed by ABF on the basis of SAP MII, enable MES projects to be realised efficiently and with a short amortisation time. On the other hand, the structure allows the application platform SAP MII to flexibly comply with specific requirements in the customer projects, which is a deciding factor, especially in technology specific processes, in the areas of production, process and quality planning and production processing.

Current Activities

Currently, ABF is completing the following complex customer projects based on SAP MII templates:

  • Detailed planning / work preparation / BDE / MDE /QDE for component manufacture (Austria)
  • BDE / MDE / QDE for tube production (Austria)
  • MES / BDE / QDE for press systems (international)
  • QDE with laboratory and measurement device connection / process safety functions for welding material factories (Germany)
  • BDE / QDE / operation maintenance / management information system for switch manufacture (Germany)

In these projects, the following aims are the focus:

  • Integration of the manufacturing processes with the business processes in the ERP (production planning, order processing, material management, quality management)
  • Determination of key figures (OEE) on the basis of the actual data compiled by the control systems of the plants
  • Traceability of the production

Solutions created on the basis of SAP MII generally offer the following advantages:

  • Low overall operating costs: SAP MII creates a real time link between production and ERP systems. Prefabricated connectors based on standards reduce the introductory costs, the complexity and the system costs.
  • Higher productivity in manufacture: the solution collects data from various systems, and provides the manufacturing employees with the relevant information in the form of alarms, reports and key figures. A company wide uniform presentation of analysis data, via a role based, configurable dashboard, supports quick, well-grounded decisions.
  • Continual optimisation of processes and performance: due to the real time analysis of the production processes, a long term increase in manufacturing performance can be achieved with SAP MII. The manufacturing employees can monitor, measure and control initiatives for process improvement.
  • Better plant usage: SAP MII offers you the opportunity to compare the performance of individual plants and/or factories. Using comparative values, you can optimise the plant usage and rationalise unproductive plants

Areas of use

Due to the platform characteristics, SAP MII can be used in a multitude of ways, so is not dependent on sector / technology. It primarily shows its advantages, when the requirements of integration of ERP and shop floor are very high. This applies for example,

  • When a customer has widely mapped their processes in the ERP, and controls the production with ERP data
  • There are target requirements on the production from master and order data from the ERP, and the AV is also handled via the ERP
  • The actual data from the production is directly entered into the ERP for controlling and subsequent calculation
  • The ERP data also contains all the necessary information for the transport logistics, and the warehouse is managed via the ERP
  • Sales and customer care is supported by prompt production feedback
  • The maintenance planning is integrated in the ERP

In such an environment, typical tasks of SAP MII are supported very simply and flexibly, whereby templates (project examples) facilitate use:

  • Operating data collection, OEE
  • Process safety (production data recording and analysis)
  • Transport logistics
  • Quality assurance
  • Load dependent maintenance
  • Documentation integration

Procedure model

The first step for an integration task should always be the definition of the interfaces, on which the manufacturing processes dock onto the business processes. Especially for group applications, the uniform support of these interfaces is crucial. The location specific realisation of shop floor applications then occurs using application templates.

In this way you achieve a standardised architecture, which ensures uniform processes in the ERP, and corresponding flexibility in the production.


Templates are pre-fabricated solutions for typical problems in the industrial sector, which can be adapted and extended to specific requirements if needed. Such templates are provided by SAP, and on the other hand ABF has developed the following templates in the course of customer specific project implementations:
