Production control system and transport control for the cross laminated timber plant in Leoben

As one of the largest and leading companies in the European timber industry, Mayr-Melnhof is a market leader in glulam and has a strong influence on cross laminated timber – the building material of the future.

Cross laminated timber is a structurally effective and space-forming solid timber construction material made of at least three layers of spruce lamellas glued together crosswise.
The layer-by-layer construction principle with simple connection details guarantees the most economical applications in all areas of construction – from single-family homes to multi-storey buildings.

In order to meet the increased demand for cross laminated timber panels, Mayr-Melnhof Holz is expanding its capacity from the current 80,000m3 to 200,000m3/year.
The existing sawmill site in Leoben has therefore been expanded to include a state-of-the-art cross laminated timber panel plant.

Realization of a production control system (MES) for the production of cross-laminated timber panels (CLT)

For the cross laminated timber plant in Leoben, which is currently under construction, ABF GmbH is supplying a complete package of software products from the OneBase® platform, project management and commissioning.

Functions of ABF for the production of cross laminated timber panels:
  • Receipt of production orders from an industry ERP system
  • Connection of a fully automated high-bay warehouse (AHRL) for storing the sawn timber packages
  • Finger-jointing supply by controlling a fully automatic shuttle and managing a buffer store (HRL)
  • Recording of the processing steps of planer, cross-cut saw, laying stations and presses for the production of cross-laminated timber panels
  • Material flow control and tracking for joinery with mending stations, turning station, a calibration loop and an underfloor processing system (UFA)
  • Realization of a warehouse management system (WMS) for an automatic crane warehouse, which is used as an intermediate buffer warehouse for CLT panels.
    This is operated with an automated crane incl.
    floor storage locations and storage and transport trolleys on several levels and controlled by OneBase®MFT.
  • Control of the material flow and the three portal processing systems (PBAs)
  • Support for manual post-processing in the joinery
  • Control and feeding of a finishing loop and the ceiling turning station
  • Material tracking for the manual cranes for the removal of two lines and for picking transport packages
Monitoring and efficiency measurement by ABF:
  • Cyclical recording of measured values
  • Recording of operating times and downtimes, taking into account a system or shift calendar
  • Calculation and recording of “Overall Equipment Effectiveness” (OEE)
